News24 – Man City ‘pull out of Harry Maguire race while United must pay £85m’
Manchester United’s hopes of signing England defender Harry Maguire have reportedly been boosted as rivals City are refusing to meet Leicester’s asking price.Maguire has established himself as one of the best centre backs in the Premier League after two fine seasons at the King Power Stadium. Pep Guardiola was said to be eyeing the 26-year-old but, according to The Sun, City have ended their pursuit due to Leicester refusing to sell for less than £85million in straight cash. It remains to be seen whether United will be willing to match Leicester’s valuation, having seen a £70m part-exchange offer including Marcos Rojo turned down last week. But Old Trafford now appears to be the only realistic destination should Maguire end his stay with the Foxes before the new season kicks off in August.Maguire is under contract until 2023 and Leicester know they are in a strong bargaining position, especially as the player has not publicly stated any desire to move.Virgil van Dijk is currently the world’s most expensive defender, having cost Liverpool £75m when he joined from Southampton in January 2018.Leicester have made it clear that this record must be smashed if Maguire is to change clubs this summer.
