LET’S MAKE MUSIC (1941)
Now on DVD: http://bit.ly/LetsMakeBob
With her Music Appreciation class dwindling in appreciation, spinster schoolteacher Malvina Adams (Elizabeth Risdon) makes a last bid at relevancy with the Newton High School swing band by composing the school anthem, “Fight on For Newton High”. When the kids are less than impressed, Malvina decides to retire but her niece Abby (Jean Rogers) sends the song to a music publisher in New York where it makes its way into the hands of bandleader Bob Crosby (brother of Bing). Bob and his arranger Joe Bellah (Joseph Buloff) track Malvina down, and with her help turn “Fight on For Newton High” into a novelty hit. Crosby invites Malvina to perform with his band in New York City, but Abby forbids it as being undignified – but even a 60-something school teacher needs an exciting night out! The screenplay is crafted by celebrated novelist and screenwriter Nathanael West.
